Seoul International Opera Program
The KyungHyang Seoul International Opera Program is an innovative training course
being announced for the summer of 2009.  Open to singers, pianists, conductors and stage
directors aspiring to professional careers in opera, this unique program not only prepares two fully
staged productions (with orchestra) for public performance, but does so by focusing on the
PROCESS of preparing roles and developing the skills necessary for success in the modern
operatic world.

The first program of its kind in Asia, the structure of this 5 week course emphasizes the acquisition
of skills participants are expected to have when working in professional theatres.  The TOTAL
Opera approach to the operatic performance experience is designed to give musicians an intimate
and consistent contact with all details of the work being prepared.  Throughout the rehearsal
process, students will be involved in discussion about their characters, text, music and expressive
use of language/diction.  Participants will also be expected to contribute informed and creative
ideas to the production.  These ideas will be generated through a combination of class sessions,
individual work with mentors and discussion in rehearsals devoted to the development of a
character (how to research and interpret a character, psychology, building back-stories, etc.),
libretto and score study, language study and acting - all under the consistent supervision of the
Music Director/Conductor and Stage Director.  The objective being a final performance that
communicates an exceptional level of detail in all aspects of performance.

The 2009 program will accommodate approximately 40 singers.  NO AGE LIMIT is imposed, and
acceptance into the program will be based upon an audition (either Live or by DVD) which
demonstrates sufficient technical ability and creative capacity.  In addition, the program also
provides opportunities for:

- 6 Pianists (to study and serve as coaches/rehearsal pianists)
-2 apprentice Conductors (to study and assist with rehearsals and coachings)
-2 apprentice Stage Directors (to study and assist principal Stage Directors)
