“From Last Year….” was composed in Knoxville during the autumn of 2020 – a year of forced isolation which, in some instances, brought about creativity and enrichment but also immense challenges and hardships. Rebecca Parr’s poetry was written prior to the darkness that came with a global pandemic, but certain messages seemed especially relevant to a time when understanding, compassion, and empathy were, perhaps, needed more than ever.

The poems contained in this song setting are described as “a colored sketch of a portrait of a woman’s life; a journey from muse to reality, and how the world outside changes who you are.” The four poems provide glimpses of stages in a life and circumstances that shine awareness on concerns of mental health.
